UNITED BANKSHARES ADDED TO S&P SMALLCAP 600 INDEX On Tuesday, May 19, 1998, Standard & Poor's Financial Information Services announced that United Bankshares, Inc. (UBSI) will be added to the S&P SmallCap 600 Index effective after the close of trading on Friday, May 22, 1998. United will be added to the Banks (Regional ) industry group making United the only regional bank in Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia included in the index. United will become one of fourteen financial institutions and the only West Virginia-based company included in the index. Standard & Poor's provides financial, economic and investment information, as well as analytical services, to the global financial community and commodity trading markets. Standard & Poor's calculates and maintains the S&P 500, S&P MidCap 400, S&P SmallCap 600 and the S&P Super Composite 1500 stock price Indexes, which are widely considered key barometers of stock market activity and performance benchmarks for professional money managers.
