26th Consecutive Year of Dividend Increases for United Bankshares United Bankshares, Inc.

(UBSI) declared a fourth quarter dividend of 21¢ per share for shareholders of record as of December 10, 1999. This is an 5% increase over the 20¢ paid in the fourth quarter of 1998 and is equal to the third quarter of 1999 dividend. Dividends per share of 82¢ for 1999 represent a 9% increase over the 75¢ per share paid for 1998.

The dividend payout of approximately $8.9 million on forty-three million shares is payable January 3, 2000. The year 1999 is the 26th consecutive year of dividend increases. The annualized fourth quarter 1999 dividend of 84¢ equates to a yield to approximately 3.4% based on recent UBSI market prices.
